Boebert Votes Against Veterans

From The Independent:

Lauren Boebert votes against bill for veterans dying from burn pits after ‘disrespectful’ SOTU heckling
The Republican congresswoman voted against the approval of the Honoring Our PACT Act on Thursday morning - saying no to supporting veterans returning from war sick and dying from toxic exposure

Rep Lauren Boebert voted against a bill to support US veterans sick and dying from toxic exposure to burn pits - just days after she heckled President Joe Biden as he spoke about the topic in his State of the Union address.

The Republican congresswoman cast her vote on Thursday morning [March 3, 2022] against passing the Honoring Our PACT Act, saying no to providing around 3.5 million veterans with access to healthcare and disability benefits after they served their country overseas.

This comes less than 48 hours after she sparked outrage among veterans, advocates and Democrat lawmakers for heckling President Joe Biden as he spoke about veterans suffering from exposure to burn pits in the SOTU on Tuesday night.

Despite Rep Boebert’s opposition, the bill sailed through the House anyway with lawmakers voting 256 to 174 in favour of its passage.

The bill gained some bipartisan support with 34 Republicans joining all the House Democrats in approving it.

Possible Factors In Long COVID

A study has been published in Cell that found four major factors that correlated with long COVID. Those factors are:

  • "the level of coronavirus RNA in the blood early in the infection, an indicator of viral load" [One assumes there is a correlation with a HIGH viral load],
  • "the presence of certain autoantibodies,"
  • "the reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus;"
  • and "Type 2 diabetes."

A Dr. Deeks pointed out the good news is that "each is actionable."

I don't pretend to be able to actually understand scientific papers, I did at least search the study itself for the word "vaccine" and found nothing relevant. I had wondered if there was any correlation with vaccination status. Very likely they started the study before the vaccines were available.

For Those Who Dare

The restaurant at Desert Hot Springs Spa has reopened.

The restaurant at Desert Hot Springs Spa, at 10805 Palm Dr. in Desert Hot Springs, which had been closed since Oct. 19 for having a rodent infestation and failing an inspection while on probation — and which developed a cockroach infestation while closed — was permitted to reopen Nov. 23. All violations had been corrected and it purchased a new health permit for $1,106. It remains on probation after failing four inspections and being shut down three times for rodents since 2019.

South of the Border was also cited:

South of the Border, at 11719 Palm Drive in Desert Hot Springs, was inspected Dec. 1 in response to a foodborne illness complaint. It received a failing grade of 80/B with one critical violation, for dishes not being washed properly. Among the 13 other violations, there were multiple flies in the kitchen, large containers of cooked beans weren’t being cooled down safely, and equipment and other surfaces needed cleaning.

DHS Spa Restaurant Racks Up More Health Violations

From the Press-Enterprise.

The restaurant at Desert Hot Springs Spa, at 10805 Palm Dr. in Desert Hot Springs, which was closed Oct. 19 because of a rodent infestation and for failing an inspection while on probation, remains closed. An inspector visited Oct. 28 and Nov. 4 at the request of the restaurant operator, who thought all violations had been resolved, according to a health department spokesperson. While the restaurant got A grades on both visits, there is still a rodent infestation — and now there’s also a cockroach infestation, the spokesperson said. On Nov. 4, the inspector saw rodent droppings on food container lids throughout a storage area and five nymph roaches on the floor at the cook line.

Vaccination Deadline Passes For NYC Employees

Yesterday (November 1) was the deadline in New York City for city employees to be vaccinated for COVID. The Police Benevolent Association said this would mean as many as 10,000 police officers would be taken out of service, but in reality that number was 34. Just plain 34, not 34,000, not 10,000. Thirty-four police officers were put on unpaid leave. Service levels remain normal. The full article:

Only 34 police officers defy New York’s vaccine mandate after union threatened 10,000 would quit

‘There is literally no effect on service at this point,’ says New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea

Nathan Place
New York

New York City’s vaccine mandate for municipal workers has taken effect, and just 34 police officers have refused it – a far cry from the 10,000 threatened by the NYPD’s union.

Under the mandate announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio, all city municipal employees – including police, firefighters, and other civil servants – must either get vaccinated for Covid-19 or be put on unpaid leave.

Hundreds of city workers protested the mandate, and the New York Police Department’s largest union, the Police Benevolent Association, claimed it would take thousands of cops off the streets.

“As of Thursday morning,” the PBA warned last week, “there were approximately 10,000 unvaccinated, uniformed NYPD members – which equals the staffing of dozens of patrol precincts – who will be barred from reporting for duty on Monday, Nov 1, unless they have applied for a religious or medical exemption.”

The union’s president, Patrick Lynch, particularly slammed Police Commissioner Dermot Shea for going along with the plan.

“Commissioner Shea and his team should have told the Mayor that this mandate and his arbitrary Friday deadline were going to throw NYPD operations into chaos,” Mr Lynch said on Thursday.

On Monday, however, that chaos failed to materialise. Less than three dozen NYPD officers were put on unpaid leave, and the department reported no interruption in service.

“Members of the police department responded to this [vaccine mandate], they came to work as they always do, and there is literally no effect on service at this point,” Mr Shea said on Monday.

Meanwhile, vaccination rates jumped. Since 20 October, when the mandate was announced, the proportion of NYPD employees who’d received at least one shot rose from 70 to 84 per cent, according to CNN. In the New York Fire Department, that number increased from 58 to 77 per cent, and in the Department of Sanitation it leapt from 62 to 83 per cent.

But while few workers were suspended over the mandate, a high number of them did call out sick. On Monday, 2,300 city firefighters stayed home from work, citing health reasons. On a normal day, less than 1,000 do so, according to FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro.

"Since the mandate was issued, our medical leave spiked up and we know that," Mr Nigro said on Monday. “The majority of them are unvaccinated. This is completely unacceptable.”

Mayor de Blasio said anyone faking sick to avoid getting vaccinated would be held accountable.

“When a city employee fakes it and puts other people’s lives in danger, that’s a serious thing and there are going to be consequences for that,” the mayor said.

Remember Prozac?

"Covid-19 patients who received fluvoxamine [Prozac] were significantly less likely to require hospitalization than those who didn’t, in the largest clinical trial evaluating the antidepressant’s effect on Covid-19 to date." "Past research suggests that fluvoxamine has anti-inflammatory properties, though scientists are still unsure of exactly how it works against Covid-19, said Dr. [Edward] Mills. The drug may help blunt the out-of-control inflammation that can cause severe disease in Covid-19, he said."

Health Dep't. Permit Revoked For DHS Spa Restaurant

The chronic problems at the Desert Hot Springs Spa restaurant seem to be, uh, very chronic.

Restaurant at Desert Hot Springs Spa, 10805 Palm Dr., Desert Hot Springs

Closed: Oct. 19
Grade: 83/B, failing
Reason: Rodent infestation, failing an inspection while on probation. The inspector found fresh and dry rodent droppings on cases of margarita mix and the floor in a storage room and below the bar sink. The restaurant has been on probation since July; it has now failed four inspections since 2019 and was shut down because of rodents twice last year. This time its permit was revoked. To reopen, it would have to correct all violations and purchase a new permit.

Nice Nutrition News

Reports of specific foods that are supposed to be beneficial to health are as common as dirt and contradict each other at least twice a day, so you might as well pick out the reports you like. Here's a nice one based on Iowa State University research and published in the Journal of ALzheimer's Disease:

Here are four of the most significant findings from the study:
  1. Cheese, by far, was shown to be the most protective food against age-related cognitive problems, even late into life;
  2. The daily consumption of alcohol, particularly red wine, was related to improvements in cognitive function;
  3. Weekly consumption of lamb, but not other red meats, was shown to improve long-term cognitive prowess; and
  4. Excessive consumption of salt is bad, but only individuals already at risk for Alzheimer’s disease may need to watch their intake to avoid cognitive problems over time.

IOW, you can't just drink red wine, you've got to eat cheese too. Or, better, take a trip to Greece.

My New Right Hip

My New Right Hip (2209)

Surgery was at Eisenhower on October 4. Recovery has gone really well. Two days ago I walked the track around the outside of Mission Springs Park once which, IIRC, is a bit less than half a mile long. I did that carrying my folded-up walker in case I needed it. I still have some restrictions, but can walk anywhere for as far as I can tolerate. The left hip is still good, so I don't think this is going to happen a second time.

60% Of Police Line-Of-Duty Deaths In 2021 Due To . . .

What do you think? Gunshot? Heart attack? Car accident? Don't be silly. It's COVID. Vehicular assault comes in second place at less than 5%; heart attacks and automobile crashes (which they distinguish from motorcycle crashes) come in 3rd and 4th. Cops can potentially show up anytime and almost anywhere in your life, often without invitation or warning. But we know that Sheriff Bianco won't enforce any vaccine mandate, and the LAPD and LAFD unions are vigorously opposing their vaccine mandates.

If only there were some agency that, you know, tried to work for the safety of the public.

Scroll down on the Officer Down Memorial Page and you'll also see that both the rate and the actual number of all on-duty deaths of law enforcement personnel in Florida and Texas greatly exceed those in California: 51 in Texas, 32 in Florida, 23 in Georgia, 17 in California.

Yet Another Way For The Unvaccinated To Poison Themselves

Iodine - or, more specifically, Betadine.

Anti-Vaxxers Are Now Gargling Iodine to Prevent Covid-19

As if attempting to one-up last week’s stupidity with regards to ivermectin, anti-vaxxers on Facebook and Twitter are advocating for a new and unproven Covid-19 treatment: Betadine, an antiseptic used to treat cuts and scrapes.

Povidone iodine, often sold under the brand-name Betadine, is an iodine-based treatment largely for topical use that kills bacteria. It’s a “commonly used cleanser in the ER and OR,” says Kenneth Weinberg, an emergency room physician in New York City. “If you’re in the ER and someone has a wound to sew it up, you use it to clean with.” When told that anti-vaxxers had taken to gargling with Betadine, Weinberg said, “Fuck me! Of course they are.”

Solutions that include povidone iodine have also previously been marketed as a vaginal douche to treat itching in some countries. “We use it before surgery to clean the vagina,” says OB/GYN Dr. Jennifer Gunter. “The reason it is bad in douches is that it kills the good bacteria and can be an irritant.”

Betadine is mostly intended for external use, as it can result in iodine poisoning if taken orally, says Gunter. But on social media, people are promoting it as a means of warding off the Covid-19 virus, either by gargling it or using it in a nasal spray. “Don’t get Covid. Prophylaxis is not that hard,” one person touting themselves as an ER doctor tweeted in a post that racked up almost 300 shares, along with a photo of various supplements, including melatonin and vitamin D (none of which have been proven to effectively prevent against Covid-19). “Also nasal spray with a couple of drops betadine in it. And gargle with original Listerine.”

Another poster on Facebook wrote, “Gargling, nasal spray and eye drops with 1 percent providone iodine (betadine) results in dramatically better outcomes with Covid infections. I do this every time I’ve been exposed.” This particular poster cites a 2020 paper written by a Bangladeshi plastic surgeon, one of several that investigates this question, to support this view. But there have been no human studies on the use of Betadine to treat COVID-19, just hypotheses and lab studies, says Dr. Michael Mrozinski, a family physician based in Australia.

Betadine does make a diluted product, sold as a gargle to treat sore throat symptoms. But the manufacturers specifically state that it is not intended for ingestion, and that “Betadine Antiseptic products” — including the gargle — “have not been demonstrated to be effective for the treatment or prevention of Covid-19 or any other viruses.” “If they are doing betadine gargles, it’s useless,” says Mrozinski.

Needless to say, the side effects of ingesting Betadine can be nasty. Weinberg said that when he was doing his residency, he treated a patient who went into kidney failure after drinking iodine and had to be on dialysis (he eventually recovered, but only after he’d started urinating reddish-brown). “I’m sure it would cause all kinds of GI symptoms as well if you ate or drank enough of it,” he says. When asked if gargling Betadine could reduce the effects of Covid-19 or prevent transmission, Weinberg said, “Fuck no.”
