About That Walmart

I was wondering, when the proposed Desert Hot Springs Walmart eventually comes before the Planning Commission, if it would be within the city's powers to include as a condition of approval that they don't open their doors on Thanksgiving or the Friday after. It would be a public safety necessity, I would think.

Having it closed on thanksgiving and X-mas is the stupidest thing ive EVER heard of. why not just shut ALL the stores AROUND THE WORLD down that day because of a few isolated events. In fact, lets ban all driving on those days, you know, cause of dui's? Hell lets just not sell any alchohol on those days at all!!!!

I don't see Wal-Mart ever coming to the city.

I assumed that by "North Palm Springs," he meant the unincorporated area, which is in the sphere of influence of DHS, so it would eventually come into Desert Hot Springs.

Walmart will either be built or go away all together. If they were to relocate, KMart, Vons, and Stater Brothers, etc, would be thrilled with them locating in NPS, where there is no customer base for them and they would then come under Palm Springs control.

That would be the sort of rumor I would expect Walmart to plant, if Walmart planted rumors - and I don't know that they do. Get some people worried that our controls and requirements are too onerous and then Walmart begins to ask for concessions.

Nothing has changed in the city code that would affect Walmart since well before they began their EIR process, so they shouldn't be getting any surprises yet.

If, however, Walmart decides to relocate, then we should put a patent on whatever controls and requirements pushed them away and generously offer to let other cities who genuinely don't want a Walmart to use our patented controls and requirements for a small fee.

Heard a rumor that the Walmart deal might be falling through, and they were going to relocate to North Palm Springs to be out of the city's controls and requirements...
