Temperatures in Death Valley

The L.A. Times has an article about temperatures this past weekend in Death Valley National Park. It's the National Weather Service (128°) versus the National Park Service (129.9°). The two thermometers are about 200 yards apart, the article says, at the "park's headquarters" which the article says is in Furnace Creek. I imagine when they say "headquarters" they mean the visitor center.

In Death Valley, a large digital thermometer prominently displayed at the park headquarters entrance showed temperatures above 130 degrees for much of the afternoon, attracting hundreds of visitors who posed for snapshots. Park rangers, however, sheepishly apologized later for what they described as errant figures on a thermometer they acknowledged was no more than "a photo op for tourists."

I am so shocked.

We learn that NOAA does not have sensors at Badwater! Chickens! Brave Kevin Martin went there yesterday, however, and measured a temperature of [drumroll please!] 135.5°, which would be a new record, if it counted, which it won't.
