Got A Hundred Bucks To Spend?
iGrill which uses the iGrill app to connect wirelessly to your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. This little jewel is $100 at Amazon - the app is free.
It took some digging around on the iGrill website to find out what this thing actually does. This makes me think they are relying on its iCoolness to sell it to iCustomers. You stick the thermometer into whatever you're cooking and it transmits that data to your iDevice. Your iDevice displays that information and (I'm assuming here) will alert you when the target temperature is reached. That's it.
You can find a bunch of wireless cooking thermometers on Amazon, and the cheapest I could find was this one by Maverick for $24.10. It comes with two voice alerts: "Your food is ready" and "Your food is almost ready." I wish it could be reprogrammed for kids and say "Your food is almost ready - wash your hands and sit down at the table."
The iGrill comes with "recipes, tips, how-to videos, grocery lists" too. And still only $100. They say "iGrill isn't an extra tool in your cluttered kitchen… it's the ONLY tool you'll ever need." Uh-huh. See if they'll let you return it after trying to chop garlic with it.
What the world really needs is a wireless cooking thermometer display that is built into an insulating beer bottle/can holder. That way you can guzzle your suds while still keeping an eye on the cooking temperature. As I understand it, Apple does not recommend using the iPad even as a coaster, much less a beer-drinking device.
Oh, wait, I may be wrong. I just had to Google "iBeer" to be sure, and look what I found. Great for the underage drinker.
