Eureka Dunes
On Sunday I took off on my own and drove to the Eureka Dunes. I'd never been to Eureka Valley It's so empty it makes Death Valley look like Times Square. I want to try camping there some time. The pavement reaches right to the bottom of Eureka Valley and then turns into a very well maintained dirt road on which I could do 50 MPH. Then it was ten miles down another road that was almost as good.
I guess I should say the Eureka Dunes, which rise 700 feet, are the highest in California.
All my photos of the Eureka Dunes.
After visiting the dunes, I decided to continue eastwards on Death Valley Road. This was not a trip I had planned in advance and I had no paper map, but I had my GPS and my vague memory of where the roads in this northern part of the park went. In case of disaster I had days worth of food and water with me, but I had no extra gasoline. So I worried a bit when I got to "Crankcase Junction" and saw what appeared to be 20 or 30 miles of dirt road stretching out before me in a part of the park where I'd never been before. Fortunately, I did not turn into one of those statistics of stupid people showing up dead in Death Valley - this time. I arrived at Furnace Creek with gas still in the tank.

Thankfully no one has the sorry task of blogging about your demise. Over the years you have over and over proved your desert hiker creds.
