J.D. Salinger Dead At Age 91

cover of Catcher In The Rye

Born in 1919, J.D. Salinger died of natural causes at his home in Cornish, New Hampshire, yesterday.

From the N.Y. Times:

In their statement, Mr. Salinger’s representatives said that “in keeping with his lifelong, uncompromising desire to protect and defend his privacy, there will be no service, and the family asks that people’s respect for him, his work and his privacy be extended to them, individually and collectively, during this time.”

The Mancheseter [New Hampshire] Union Leader has a long bio in its obituary on Salinger.

From the Boston Globe:

Mr. Salinger served in the Army during World War II, rising to the rank of sergeant. His unit took part in the D-Day landings and the liberation of Paris (during the latter, Mr. Salinger sought out and was befriended by Ernest Hemingway).
