Anthony Magdaleno encountered Tony Chen near the east entrance to Vons at 10:59 pm on Saturday, October 10, 2009. Magdaleno shot Chen in the head from close range resulting in Chen's death. Magdaleno fled the scene, running across Palm Dr. to the K-Mart parking lot. From there he fled to a residential area nearby and was not found by searching officers.

Detectives got their break when a witness came forward several days after the shooting "because it was the right thing to do." From there, other witnesses have come forward. Detectives followed up on the leads provided and were able to identify Magdaleno as the person doing the shooting.

We still need the public's help in this case. Please call Detective Paiz or Sgt. Dan Bressler at the police department (760-329-2904) if you know anything either about the victim or the suspect in this case.

Mr. Magdaleno shot Mr. Chen intentionally, in the head from close range, and without provocation. The police have not yet discovered a motive in the crime. If it was a gang initiation rite, the police have not found that out yet. There was no prior connection between the two men.

Several witnesses came forward which allowed the police to identify Anthony Raymond Magdaleno as the suspect. He had a record of auto thefts and had been released from a jail in Orange County only last month. Police knew he lived in Hawaiian Gardens so, in addition to all the police forces in Coachella Valley, they sent his info to Hawaiian Gardens. The L.A. County Sheriff's Department Gang Unit was already familiar with Mr. Magdaleno, so as soon as the info was received, they went and picked him up.

He has recently adorned his face with Hawaiian Gardens tattoos. He is associated with the gang "Barrio Hawaiian Gardens," but he has also associated with gang members in Desert Hot Springs.

There are no other suspects in the murder and there was no indication of robbery. Police are still asking those with information to come forward. Call DHS Police at 760-329-2904 to speak to Sgt. Bressler or Detective Paiz.

I am a little older than anthony but hung out with him a couple of times he befriended me through some cholos grew up with at Killingworth and he was just a kid want to get stoned and kick but i did notice from time to time if i was talking to someone he did not know he would ask "IS THIS GUY FUCKING WITH YOU" and unfortunately this might have been the mentality of this very young man but he was just a impressionable kid and now two lives lost this might of been the possible motive

You need to work on your Googling. The answer is right here on Ron's Log. February 21, 2012, Magdaleno pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 35 years to life.

Anyone know the status of this case? Ron can you look into it. Not finding any current info past 2011.

Here's what Commander Singer told me today (December 13): "I've checked the court notes related to Mr. Magdaleno's case. He remains in the custody of the Riverside Sherriff's Office and is scheduled for a trial readiness conference on January 12, 2011. The court notes indicate that the trial should start no later than 3/14/2011."

May 2010. THATS the last story I could find. Although it looks like that was delayed until July 2010. My question is still, what happened? Why havent they announced a conviction? I heard unofficially that he was released and charges were dropped, but I cant confirm or deny that rumor.

I don't know. Here's a KESQ report that he had a court appearance scheduled on July 23, 2010, but there's no follow-up report that I can find. If you have info that he's going to trial in May 2011, then that would be the state of things now.

What happened in this case? I cant find anything more than he was going to trial in may.
