Forgent owns the rights to the JPEG compression algorithm due its purchase of Compression Labs Inc. in 1997. They started demanding royalties in 2002 and have made $90 million from that so far. Story here. Now they are going after some companies that have not been forthcoming with royalties. Check out this partial list of companies they will be suing:

Gettin' The Details

In Massachusetts they are working through the final details for gay marriages to begin on May 17. Justices of the Peace have been ordered to perform the marriages or resign. "Bride" and "groom" on the application form have been replaced with "Party A" and "Party B."

Welwood Murray Cemetery

A few days ago Ken led me to the Welwood Murray Cemetery which is (as far as I can determine) the only cemetery in Palm Springs, except for the Indian cemetery on Tahquitz. Welwood Murray is nearly full, although Ken has been able to obtain a spot in it. Naturally, I took photos.

Smokin'

When George was here we went to Casino Morongo for breakfast. We were amazed to see that smoking was allowed. Well of course! I had never been to a casino outside of Vegas, and it hadn't occurred to me that Indian Reservations would be exempt from the no smoking laws. We asked about seatbelts, but nobody could really say.

Cyclist Yellow Pages

Adventure Cycling has its Cyclist's Yellow Pages on-line. Somehow I only just heard about this now. I imagine it's been there for awhile. The paper version is among the most useful documents for cyclists.

The top deck on the Provincetown II ferry about 1990 returning from P-town to Boston after the annual Outriders bike ride. This used to be the only ferry, and it took about 3 hours to make the trip.
