1907 Yellowstone Rules & Regs

The 1907 rules and regulations for Yellowstone. These are fairly interesting, but to save you a lot of squinting let me summarize them.
- No vandalism of the geysers, etc. No graffiti in the "sediments or incrustations" there. Don't throw anything into a geyser. Don't take away any minerals, specimens, natural curiosities or wonders.
- Do not ride or drive or graze stock on geyser formations.
- Do not cut any living timber. You can cut down a dead tree for firewood, but the remaining stump must be 12 inches or shorter.
- Fires are permitted "only when necessary," and must be extinguished afterwards. Take "utmost care" not to start a wildfire.
- Hunting, killing, wounding or capturing birds and wild animals is prohbited "except dangerous animals when necessary to prevent them from destroying life or inflicting an injury." The property (guns, traps, teams, horses, means of transportation) of anyone violating this rule will be forfeited. Possession of a firearm in the park requires written authorization from the park Superintendent. Otherwise, all firearms, traps, nets, seines and explosives are turned over to the sergeant in charge at the first station the visitor encounters in the park. When you leave the park, you get them all back.
- No fishing other than with hook & line is permitted. Commercial fishing is prohibited. The park Superintendent can restrict fishing in any water in any season, until overridden by the Secretary of the Interior.
- No permanent residence or business in the park without written permission from the Department of Interior. The Superintendent may "grant authority to competent persons to act as guides." Only authorized guides can have a pack train.
- Herding, grazing and driving cattle is prohibited unless you have permission from the Secretary of the Interior. It is forbidden to cut hay in the park except for the use of wild game, or for other uses authorized by the Superintendent or Secretary of the Interior.
- "No drinking saloon or barroom will be permitted within the limits of the park."
- No advertising in the park except for directional signs on buildings on leased ground.
- Violation of any of the above rules or disorderly conduct or bad behavior will get you permanently banished from the park.
- No graffiti on "mile posts or sign boards, or any of the platforms, seats, railings steps or any structures or any tree."
Violation of any of the rules is a misdemeanor punishable by a $1,000 fine and/or 2 years in prison.
You will notice there are TWO rules against graffiti. The first one pertains only to the geyser areas and formations. Violation of that gets you banished and possibly convicted of a misdemeanor. Rule #12 is for graffiti everywhere else and may get you convicted of a misdemeanor, but not banished. An odd distinction.
