It's Orange, But Is It A Jumpsuit?

Timothy Kooyman
This is a cat torturer.

He has pleaded guilty to four felonies, including dousing a living cat with gasoline and setting it afire and mutilating two other cats who were found still alive. He has been sentenced to five years and "one strike." If it had gone to court and was convicted he could have gotten 6 years, 8 months plus two strikes.

The jumpsuit reference is because at other points in my weblog I've said how much I enjoy posting photos of people in orange jumpsuits. Many prisoners actually are given jumpsuits. This photo of Kooyman looks like just a mug shot where he happened to be wearing an orange t-shirt...or maybe the sheriff distributes t-shirts and pajama pants.

I went to the Daily Bulletin and for the price of $2.95 (I exist only to serve) got a copy of the June 2, 2008, article. They were more explicit there than in more recent articles. Here are the relevant parts:

Kooyman was arrested in a Rancho Cucamonga neighborhood on May 13 after residents called to report him behaving suspiciously.

Deputies found a bloody scene in the truck along with two tormented cats.

Kooyman told police he had snapped the cats' legs with his hands and snipped off their tails with scissors after first trying to get them to fight, according to police reports.

The two cats were so badly injured that they had to be euthanized.

An investigation quickly linked Kooyman to a brush fire near the north end of Etiwanda Avenue earlier that same day that started when somebody apparently doused a cat with gasoline and tossed it into a field, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.

Kooyman was living out of his truck at the time, but had previously stayed at the National Inn in Corona.

Investigators believe Kooyman used his room there to commit other sadistic acts on felines, including a calico, a black and white, and a Siamese he may have lured from a nearby neighborhood.

Kooyman told police he broke the cats' legs, ran one over with his truck, decapitated another with an ax, and, after a failed attempt at drowning the third, he cut it repeatedly with a razor knife, according to police reports.

Local animal control officials confirmed finding the bodies of the three cats in an alley near the hotel.

Hotel staff told deputies a maid found a large amount of blood and fur while cleaning the hotel room, including inside the mini-refrigerator.

Maybe some of his future fellow prisoners will deal him some stronger justice. But, if he survives prison, it sounds like he should then be transferred to a mental hospital for a much, much longer stay.

UPDATE: There will be a sentencing hearing on May 5, 2009, Dept R-2 at 8:30 a.m. in the Rancho Cucamonga courthouse. Voices for Pets has collected over 5,000 signatures on a Petition regarding this case against Timothy Kooyman, and will present them to the Judge on that day. This case involved 3 pet cats that Timothy Kooyman tortured and mutilated, taken from Rancho Cucamonga neighborhoods on May 13, 2008. One of them was set on fire while still alive, and that caused a brush fire which he was also charged for. The treating emergency veterinarian for the 2 additional cats wrote in his report that it was the worst case of animal abuse he had ever seen. One of the cats had identification, and its owner was notified of what occurred after his cat was euthanized due to its injuries. Kooyman will be eligible for parole in 2 and 1/2 years, and all shelters and rescue groups will need to be put on alert when he is free again, as he may try to "adopt" from them. For those of you who live in Riverside County, please take note: In late April of last year, prior to his arrest for the Rancho Cucamonga crimes, Kooyman tortured 3, possibly 5 cats while he was living at the National Inn motel in Corona, which is located in Riverside County. During a subsequent investigation after Kooyman was arrested in Rancho Cucamonga, the motel manager told a San Bernardino County Detective that one of the housekeeping staff found blood and cat fur all over Kooyman's motel room. Unfortunately, the motel manager did not think this was a crime scene, and never called the Corona Police. But the motel manager did call City of Corona Animal Control on May 5, 2008 to come pick up a dead cat near the motel dumpster. Then, on May 7, 2008, three dead cats were discovered by an employee of the Walgreens store near that store's dumpster. The employee reported that one of the cats had been decapitated, but City of Corona Animal Control did nothing about it, and didn't think to preserve the evidence (the poor mutilated dead cats). Guess what - the Walgreens store dumpster is adjacent to the motel's parking lot (where Kooyman was living). At this writing, no charges have been filed by the Riverside County District Attorney. However, now that the San Bernardino County case has concluded, we are hopeful that Riverside County will pursue the matter, investigate it, and prosecute. We really hope they will press charges -- some of the most gruesume things were done to those cats in the Corona motel room. For details, see an article written by Rod Leveque, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, June 2, 2008, or www.dailybulletin.com

P.S. Note to Ron: the lovely orange prison attire is two pieces - a top and a bottom. Don't know why it is referred to as a jumpsuit.!

I think a better deterrent might be giving him a taste of his own tortures, but we'd probably have to send him over to Iran or Saudi Arabia to get away with that.

I did not know that animal torture was a felony. That's good. It should be publicized more and maybe there would less of it.
