Based solely on this story of a law student who beat up a baseball-bat-carrying intruder who was trying to steal his laptop. The law student was willing to let the thief get away with his wallet and guitars, but the laptop contained four months of work.

OTOH, maybe this is only a lesson that you should make daily backups of your important work.
