Useless Showers For The Homeless

What I think will be the main problem with using facilities near Indian and I-10 to serve the homeless has cropped up: they've set up showers for the homeless, but there's no way to get there. Unless the homeless person has his own motor vehicle, his choices to get to the free showers are hitchhiking, bicycling, or walking to get to the McLane Street location which, as you can see on this Google map, is about 3½ miles (measured from the edge of Palm Springs, the nearest urban area) across open desert with blowing sand and no sidewalks. If you were homeless, is that how you'd choose to clean yourself up, or would you try to get by using a restroom somewhere, or dipping in a fountain, or running onto a golf course when the sprinklers are going?
