Ultra-Bush
Daily Show clip that includes Bush's "Mandela" quote: Mandela is dead. The Nelson Mandela Foundation assures us the President was mistaken.
Really, I haven't had enough coffee this morning to guess what Bush was aiming to say. Anybody else think, like I do, that this is confirming the rumors of his secret drinking and depression?
The White House has faithfully preserved the comment in this transcript of the press conference:
Part of the reason why there is not this instant democracy in Iraq is because people are still recovering from Saddam Hussein's brutal rule. I thought an interesting comment was made when somebody said to me, I heard somebody say, where's Mandela? Well, Mandela is dead, because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas. He was a brutal tyrant that divided people up and split families, and people are recovering from this.
One would have thought that every reporter's head would have jerked up at that point and Bush would have noticed, but, hey, I don't know the press corps, and there's no evidence that Bush ever notices anything happening in the world we call "reality."

As for KB's remark that I don't understand Bush's way of speaking because I don't like him, you don't know what you're talking about. There have been lots of politicians I haven't liked, but if they string together a reasonable sentence I can understand it. I understood every word that Reagan said. Bush can't speak, so I can't understand his sentences.

When Bush leaves out words, the meaning gets lost. What he said was "where's Mandela? Well, Mandela is dead, because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas."
What you're saying he meant to say was "where ARE THE Mandelas? Well, THE Mandelas is ARE dead, because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas." So it's just his chronic inability to speak that's the issue here.

I thought these people understood nuance?
I guess we can say Bush was talking over their heads.
All those books they're supposedly reading and still dumb as a rock.

He was saying the "Mandelas" of Iraq that could come
out and lead the country forward are not around.
They're dead. They were killed by Saddam's brutal
regime. Mandel is dead. The nation's "brightest"
journalists should have been able to figure it out.
It was apparently over the reporter's heads
because--- 1/ they're dumb. 2/ they chose not to do
their jobs and ask him for a clarification. or 3/
they chose to distort his comments.
Take a pick?

Totally understand what he meant, and probably so did the reporters, which is why they didn't jerk. No matter how much explanation could be said here I am sure you would never understand. It is reference to an earlier conversation where someone was asking where are the Mandela's of Iraq, where are the individuals that can lead that are Iraqi. They could have easily said where is Washington or Jefferson, but most today may not understand that either. I like Bush I understand what he says. You do not like Bush and you don't understand what he says. Next time around there'll be a democrat in the office. I will not like him/her and will not undeerstand what he/she says. BFD
