Can't Say "Gay?"

Eight Guys Out is a club that gets gay men over age 40 together for dinner in a restaurant. The idea is to meet nice guys in a comfortable atmosphere. It works in NYC, and they're expanding to San Francisco and Los Angeles, where they have run up against resistance from local radio stations who refuse to carry their ads. Here's the ad copy:

Are your nights a blur of must-see TV, Internet chat, and Chinese takeout? Are you looking for a safe, enjoyable way to meet interesting new people with similar interests? If you are a gay man, you should know about 8 Guys Out--a dining club created for upscale gay men who are ready to meet new friends and partners in a relaxed setting. Eight Guys Out arranges dinner parties for eight at some of the finest restaurants. ... The intimate dining experience promotes meaningful conversation in a safe, relaxed environment.

Makes your blood race, don't it?

Here's the response they got from KDFC-FM, a classical station in San Francisco:

"I've learned from my management," wrote an account manager, "that we won't be able to take advertising from 8 Guys Out, I'm sorry to say. Based on [our] previous experience when the gay-themed 'Boy Meets Boy' TV [show] advertised with us, apparently we had a lot of complaints from core listeners about the ad. My management's concern is that similarly themed advertising might anger many of our listeners.

"I've sent information about Classical 102.1 KDFC to you in the mail should you launch Dinner Introductions here in the Bay Area, as hetero-dating connection services are accepted on our station."

It sounds like KDFC won't allow the word "gay" on their airwaves.
