Black vs. African-American

John McWhorter worries about what to call himself and others in this country who trace their origins to black Africa. He settles on "Black." I'll call someone whatever they tell me they want to be called, but I do prefer "Black" (for those who are black). "African-American" was never meant to include north Africans like Egyptians and Moroccans, so it's not entirely accurate, is it? But the bigger drawback to African-American is you need to know if the person is an American. And it doesn't address how one is to refer to all those black-skinned Africans outside America. Nelson Mandela, for example, is not an African-American. I once heard a TV announcer stumble when he nearly referred to a black Briton as "African-American." He quickly decided not to refer to the subject's race at all, probably afraid that "Black" was not PC.

@ Marie...
jungle porch monkey african booty scratchers is such a RUDE and ignorant term. Africans are not about breaking their necks for other races, they are about breaking their necks for a better opportunity. Obviously I am of african origin but i have lived in the U.S. my entire life. There is a serious difference between here (U.S.) and there (Africa)
The U.S. gives more opportunities to be successful so one can take care of one's family. This is not the same back home. Without an education you're limited. There's no GED program, no welfare, ssi, section 8, etc etc. out there. If you're uneducated, that's it for you. If you're destitute ...that's it for you. Children are subjected to begging from the time they can walk and utter a few words. So when we come here and see grown men and women decide to be lazy with all the opportunity in the world it hurts our hearts because so many would kill for the chance to be able to go to school, to be able to have assistance with any and everything. The real porch monkeys are the ones that drop out of highschool ( school is free and not difficult so riddle me that ), the one's that abuse the system. Welfare and no desire to work, SSI and a fabricated disability. I won't lie...africans look down on laziness. So as u spew ignorant niggerish words out of your mouth rather than ask an african why they come across the way they do, you too will fall into that category. My mother came here with no education, put herself and all her children through school...all the way thru grad school. And is now considered wealthy all due to ambition and opportunity. Bottom line...y'all need to make the most of what you have been given and realize that you are given A LOT.

I am Black and i do not like to be called african american. africans are rude, ignorant, and they look down on the Blacks here in America. Will trip and nearly break their necks for other races .I am a Registered nurse and work with
many africans and I see a big difference in the way those jungle porch monkey african booty scratchers treat Black people compared to other people. This
is at the hospital where we Black nurses are just as educated.

Uh-huh. So, before hanging any ethnic label on any black-skinned person I have to inquire if he has any slaves in his ancestry? That'll work well.

And I am surprised that not a single black American wants to be called an "African-American," that they all just caved to the incredib le pressure from the Census people.

Actually ... contrary to popular myth -- the
group known as the 'Black-Americans' (BAs) and
the group known as the African-American (AAs)
are *not* the same groups, but rather, they are
two (2) entirely different groups of people.

As a result, the terms (like the groups) are not
synonymous and should not be used inter-changeably.

As confusing as it may sound ...

*** The term AA should only be used to
refer to those people a who are a part
of the largely MULTI-Racial ETHNIC group
which consists only of those who are are ...
"the Descendents of the Survivors of the negro
chattel-slavery System that existed on the
continental U.S. during the antebellum era".

--------------------AND--------------------

*** The term BA, on the other hand, should
only be used to refer to those people a who
are a part of the MONO-Racial RACE group
which consists only of those who were / are the
"volitional-immigrants whose ancestors were / are
solely predominantly of the Negro / Black "race" and
were generally from the sub-Sahara region of Africa"

(ex. An Black African immigrant from Nigeria who
becomes a citizen of the U.S. would be referred
to as a 'Black American' (BA) of Nigerian Ethnicity.

While a White African immigrant from Nigeria who
becomes a citizen of the U.S. would be referred
to a 'White American' (WA) of Nigerian Ethnicity.)

It should be noted that the people of the largely
MULTI-racial (so-called) AA ETHNIC grouping
NEVER once requested that the U.S. government
begin to refer to them by the mis-nomered term of
”African-American” (AA) – but rather, the decision
to do so was made solely on the part of the U.S.
Census Bureau (along with erroneously trying to make
that particular ETHNIC group synonymous with the
’Black’ RACIAL group) and has been nothing but a
headache for the people of the AA Ethnic grouping
since (none of whom have expressed interest in
being given, yet again, yet another "label" --
by society or the government-- against their will)

I agree. I have always been uncomfortable with a description that refers to the past - where one is from - and does not just simply refer to the present - what one is. Not coming from the US the concept that everyone has to be categorized with a term ending in "American" is indded odd - especially for non US citizens. And, is a person whose ancestry from African, and now is a citizen of a Central or South American country still correctly described as an "African American"?
