Today's Feel Good Story
When I was a little kid I was impressed when the family cat in I Remember Mama was cured of injuries resulting from a fight by application of ether. After being under for about 24 hours, she leapt forth fully reinvigorated. It taught me the value of the ignorant abuse of drugs. "Just pass out! You'll be fine in the morning!"
Anyway, in St. Louis Quentin, a basenji, has pulled off the same trick at the city animal shelter. After 15 minutes in a chamber filled with carbon monoxide, he sprang forth to look for a new owner. Well, he "sprang" about as well as somebody who'd been out partying all night...but he wasn't dead.

Entertainment
Triple bill:
Beau Travail
Querelle
Midnight Express
On some hot, steamy night.
I happened to be up eating tamari almonds and flipping the channels. Best was Dave's Top 10 on why it's good to be a twin. Down the list was Arnie S. announcing he would run for governor. Fine. Just fine. It's time the Kennedys started a west coast branch.

Beau Travail
Curently I'm in the midst of Beau Travail on DVD. I've seen this once before in the theater, and re-ordered it from Greencine in error...but, boy, it sure is worth a second look. I'm a-burning up the pause button.
Not being at all familiar with the history of the Foreign Legion, Tom and I wondered when in hell this thing was supposed to be set. The music in the dance clubs seems 80s, but we thought the Foreign Legion had disappeared in the 1960s. We were so wrong. It still goes today! Even now you can join and after 5 years of honorable service, you become a French citizen. If France sends troops into Iraq, it seems they will be Foreign Legionnaires.

Life Ain't Over til They Stop Carding You
Got carded tonight when buying a bottle of chardonnay at Bread & Circus. What a laugh! Each time that happens I think it will be the last time in my life, but I've always been wrong. Maybe I'm right this time. Someday there has to be a last time.
