Liability Waiver Wins!
Back on the 2000 Washington DC AIDS Ride a woman cyclist died. Her family sued Pallotta Teamworks and the University of Maryland trauma center. Now the lawsuit has been dismissed because the deceased signed the required waiver. Those waivers do exactly what they're supposed to do. The article discusses some of the circumstances of her death, but the way I heard it...they assumed dehydration, so they kept giving her saline IVs. Actually, she turned out to be hyperhydrated. She had gone overboard on the salty Gatorade, and drunk tons of water as instructed. Her body simply couldn't eliminate the excess water fast enough. It was the IVs that pushed her over the edge.
A reminder here that I continue to update the Ron's Log index of AIDS Ride references here.
